The Problem with big cities and how to fix it

I recently moved to a big city in India where everyone is always on the run. People always have somewhere to go and they are always in a hurry to reach that destination. Since this city is such a fast city, it has changed people. The people here are more hard and defensive. And why shouldn’t they be? The city is filled with swindlers and thieves who can run with their money if they are not careful.

But the problem is, because the people are so hard and defensive, they have let chivalry and politeness die. I could stand everyday next to the same person every day but I would not say hi. Why should I? I do not even know him! Or take another example where if someone wants to go to a shop to buy something. They just take their things and leave. No one stops to smile and thank the shop keeper.

How can the city of people with hard shells change? It’s simple.

The answer to everything is: be kind. And this isn’t a metaphorical and a Disney solution. It really is that simple and it works. My best friend and I went around town the other day. In my head, I was prepared to be stiff and hard if necessary. In my head, I knew that I had to be on my toes. But here came my best friend who was super polite to the shop keepers! She smiled and said thank you. She told them to have a nice day. She even gave them a tip if necessary. But she was polite. And the people in return were super nice to her and gave her the respect that she deserved as well.

What I realised that day was that in order to have a nice world, you have to be nice. You attract what kind of lifestyle you have. If you are polite to the people around you, you are bound to have people polite to you back. Because you make someone’s day by being polite, they are polite back to you. In fact, they might even go out of their way to make you happy.

The Butterfly Effect can even go both ways. The butterfly effect means creating a ripple effect so if positive actions and result in positive reactions, negative actions can also result in negative reactions.

I would like to demonstrate this in a real-life scenario at a restaurant.

The man says to the waiter, “Why are there fewer options on this menu?”

The waiter puts on his polite smile and tells the man, “Because this is just the appetizers.”

The man impatiently replies, “Then bring the proper menu fast!”

By now the waiter feels undervalued and returns to the table with a foul mood.

When the waiter returns with the menu, the man snatches the menu from him and tells the waiter his order. The waiter notes his order down and leaves for the kitchen when the man stops him. “Repeat the order to me again. Did you write down everything I said correctly?”

The waiter feels insulted because he has worked at the restaurant for a long time and this man is undermining his abilities.

The waiter reads out his order in a controlled tone and leaves. He comes back and dumps the food on the table, instead of serving it individually like he does for the other tables.

The waiter comes to the table to ask for the order. “Does your restaurant offer more options?” the man asks the waiter.

“Yes, this is just the appetizer menu.” The waiter politely replies, “I’ll bring the food menu if you are ready?”

“Yes, thanks,” the man smiles.

The waiter smiles back and goes to fetch the menu. The waiter is in a good mood because the customer seemed polite to him and his accepting his help politely.

When the waiter returns, he hands over the menu with a genuine smile on his face. “What do you recommend? We do not want anything too spicy,” the man asks the waiter.

The waiter now feels appreciated and feels happy because the customer thinks highly of his opinion.

The waiter tells the man the best meal available, with a reasonable price and that suits his taste bud needs.

“Thank you so much,” the man replies with a smile and gives back the menu.

The waiter returns with the food with a smile on his face and an eagerness to please the customer.

There you have it. You need to remember to always be kind to someone, because it is only your kindness that will lead to kindness all around you.
