Nonverbal is powerful

Nonverbal is Everything that communicates but has no words.

Whenever you opened up a website, a blog, and an app, before reading anything you get the impression from its interface. You might not be reading anything, still that website is communicating to you. Same happens in our lives. Everything we associate with ourselves, communicates about us to others. A pen, a purse, a fancy car all of them are communicating. So, all day long we are communicating non-Verbally.

Have you ever had a Bad handshake with anyone?

Let’s do a small activity. Take your hands out of your pockets and pretend that you are having a bad handshake. Make sure to shake it with all the energy you have and you are breaking someone’s hand, because this is what bad handshake looks and feels like.

Now, what happened? Have you realized how funny faces you have made while doing this? It’s like I did not ask you to make a funny face, and yet you did it. Why is that? Because we are humans. And Humans betray what they feel, what they think, what they desire, what they intend, what makes them anxious and what they fear.

Do you know there is an area in the limbic system of our brain which is called elegant. And it is called elegant because it takes shortcuts. It doesn’t think. And it plays a vital role in our nonverbal behavior. Let me understand it to you by taking an example. What if you are sitting in a classroom and your teacher brings a lion or a tiger with him. He enters the classroom and starts roaming around along with that lion. What would you do? Definitely you would wave at him and would say hey bro! come eat us. Right? No! The whole class will be freeze. There will be a complete silence in the class. No one will even dare to take a loud breath. And this is because of the limbic system.

Humans betray what they feel!

Everything coming from the limbic system is so strong that you hear a loud voice and freeze. You are watching a T.V and get a bad news and you instantly put hand on your mouth. Why is that? Because limbic system resides inside of our brain and it can process 40 million of information within a one second.

Now the question is, we are using nonverbal every day, but why do we use it. To make other people comfortable. To show them that we are being empathetic. Carl Sagan, a famous cosmologist, said,

Who are we? What are we?

And if we think deeply it takes a lot of courage to ask these questions to yourself that who are we in this universe? what are we in this universe? He said,

“All we are is the total sum of our influence on others.”

That’s all we are. It is not about how many cars we have? What is our bank balance? What is the cost of the watch on your wrist? It is about our influence on others. And interesting thing is that the primary way to influence others is through nonverbal.

It is about that nice handshake.

It is about that tab on the shoulder.

It is about that touch of the hand.

It is about that behavior that communicates love which words simply cannot do.

So now when you will complete reading this article, you will have choices. How do I change my nonverbal? How do I become a person of influence? Because if there is one thing, we need in this world to become a person of influence, that is nonverbal and truly to be empathetic.

So, when I see this picture, it says it all. That’s why we need nonverbal, because nonverbal is powerful.

That’s why we need nonverbal!
